  Prologue

  Marx Callahan settled back in the chair behind the desk at the Golden Shackles BDSM club and watched as his brother, Jackson, let Steve Tyler into the office. This would be their first official meeting since the three of them had acquired the club less than a month before. The original owner was dealing with a serious illness and had let the private dungeon deteriorate over the last six months. They bought it in hopes of restoring it to the safe and classic atmosphere it had once represented. The three of them, along with two previously undisclosed investors, were going to hammer out the details of how to make that happen in this, their first official meeting.

  “How is business now that the mad rush of Christmas is over, Steve?” he asked.

  The other man grunted and sat down. “Quiet but steady. That I can handle for a while. Valentine’s Day will be here before you know it, though.”

  Steve owned Heavy Trinkets, a leather and BDSM shop that carried everything from custom-made jewelry to erotic romance books. At six foot two inches with shaggy brown hair and hazel eyes, he looked the part, wearing leather pants and a leather vest over his long-sleeved black sweatshirt.

  “We’ll be by soon to order something for Kelly,” Jackson said. “I’ve got an idea of what I want, but you will have to help us figure out how to get it to work.”

  Steve rolled his eyes. “Can’t you guys come up with something easy for me for a change?”

  Marx chuckled. “Where’s the fun in that?”

  “I’m surprised Ben didn’t come.” Jackson took a seat off to the side of the desk putting him in view of both of them. Steve’s brother, Ben, was a veterinarian and helped run their ranch as well.

  “He said that since he wasn’t really a Dom and only practiced with us that he didn’t think he needed to be part of the initial decision making.” Steve shrugged.

  “Well, let’s get down to business,” he began.

  “What about the two investors you said would be meeting us here today?” Steve asked with a frown.

  “They’re on their way. I thought I would tell you a little about them before they arrived.” Marx drew in a deep breath and, glancing over at his brother, revealed their silent partners to Steve.

  “Jackson and I met them when we were in Chicago nearly ten years ago. They
give seminars and workshops all over the states now, but back then Max was just getting into the lifestyle with Sawyer as his guide.”

  “Are you fucking telling me that you’re talking about Master D and Master J?” Steve interrupted him, leaning forward.

  “That’s exactly who I’m talking about.” Marx couldn’t help the smug smile that escaped.

  “How in the world did you manage to convince them to invest in this place? Why would they want to do that?” Steve asked.

  “Relax for a minute and let me explain,” Marx said. “You’re jumping the guns here.”

  Steve scowled at him but sat back in his chair and steepled his fingers as he waited for Marx to continue.

  “We became friends back then and the friendship held throughout the years. Jacks and I’ve attended several of their seminars and have been overwhelmingly impressed. More so because we know where these two men started. Both of them have control issues but embraced the D/s way of life to learn discipline—and succeeded.”

  Jackson took over. “They’ve been traveling for nearly seven years now and are ready to settle down. They want somewhere that’s off the beaten path where they can start their own family. Marx convinced them that Perkins City is perfect for them.”

  “They are going to be running the club for us since none of us wants to assume that role. While we will all have equal votes on financial and major rule making, they will have the final say in all things related to the club. We will all five vote on potential members and on any decisions to remove a member for some reason.” Marx looked around at the others.

  “With there being an uneven number of us, Steve, there will always be a check in place in case of ties,” Jackson added.

  “I still can’t believe you managed to talk them into settling down here. I’ve only seen them once, when I was at a buying show in Denver. They were there giving a workshop and I managed to get invited. They’re amazing.” Steve shook his head.

  “They should be here in a few seconds now. Do you have any questions, Steve?” Marx asked.

  “No. I think we all agree on everything, and having them will be an added measure of security as far as I’m concerned. They know their stuff and will be able to make sure we don’t harbor any crazies.”

  Marx was about to respond to Steve that sometimes the crazies could operate under the radar for a long time, but there was a knock at the door. He nodded at his brother and watched Jackson get up and let the two men they’d been talking about enter the room. Steve immediately stood up and held out his hand.

  “I’m Steve Tyler. It’s a pleasure to meet you both.”

  Chapter One

  Sawyer Jernigan walked in behind Max and looked around the room. He always assessed the situation as soon as he walked into a room. It was a leftover trait from his military days and had proved to be a fortunate one on more than one occasion. This time, his instincts were that the people in the room meant no harm and were happy to see them. He relaxed a margin and shook Steve’s hand when it was offered to him.

  Once all the introductions had been made, he and Max took seats on the opposite side of the desk as Jackson with Marx to his left and Steve on Max’s right. He still didn’t let down his guard since they were outnumbered if there were problems, not that he expected any. This was a meeting, not a skirmish, and none of them were trying to outman the other. He sighed and tried to force himself to relax even a little bit more.

  “How was the trip out here?” Marx asked.

  “Uneventful. Just the way we like them,” Max said. “I think we should eventually talk about installing a private airstrip outside of town, though. It would come in handy for flying in guests. Since I have to make trips two or three times a year, it would make my life considerably easier.”

  “Hadn’t thought of that,” Marx said. “Let’s plan to discuss that soon.”

  “I sure would appreciate it when I make trips out for market.” Steve nodded in agreement.

  “We’ve set up the guest quarters here in the club and have arranged for you to view some of the available land in the area as locations for your home. Leslie Guild will show you around tomorrow after you’ve had a chance to unload and settle in.” Marx reached across the desk to hand each of them a folder. “That contains the particulars she put together for you. Her card is stapled inside.”

  “Thanks.” Sawyer took the folder, but he didn’t bother opening it yet. They needed to finish discussing the club first.

  “We’re satisfied with the changes you’ve made to the club’s rules and bylaws, as well as the general management guides,” Max said. “I appreciate that you will trust our judgment in handling the day-to-day aspects of running the club. You don’t really know us that well, so it is a stretch considering we are all Doms and extremely territorial in nature.”

  Sawyer had to suppress a chuckle on that one. That was an understatement if he’d ever heard one. No doubt they just didn’t want to have to deal with the nitpicky things that come with running any business, much less one that involved BDSM.

  “I for one am more than happy to turn over that part to you. I already have a stressful business, and coming to the club is one of the ways I blow off steam. I sure as hell don’t want to blow that to hell for me.” Steve grinned over at them.

  “Did you decide on a date to open back up for business yet?” Sawyer asked to bring the conversation back around.

  “We want to open the doors on Valentine’s. We all agree that a themed night would be a welcome distraction from the fact that we made everyone reapply for membership. There were quite a few who were pissed,” Marx said with a wry grin.

  “That’s putting it mildly,” Jackson added with a wince. “Most of the members were fine with it, though.”

  “A change in ownership isn’t always followed by revetting the members, but it gave us the opportunity to weed some out that we didn’t agree should have been members in the first place.” Steve crossed his leg, settling an ankle over the other knee.

  “Did you have any legal issues crop up?” Max asked.

  “Not yet, but I’m expecting some when we actually send out the letters denying membership to some of them.” Marx ran a hand over his head. “We need to start doing that soon. It’s less than three weeks ’til Valentine’s.”

  “Give us a few days to settle in and review the notes you’ve made on the applications. We could plan to meet, say”—Max pulled out his phone and scrolled through it—“Saturday, the twenty-fifth, at two that afternoon.”

  Sawyer watched the other three men pull out their phones to check the date. After looking at everyone, Marx nodded in agreement.

  “Sounds good to me. We’ll plan to meet you here at two then, to vote on members. You can generate the various letters on the computer using the club’s letterhead. Now all that’s left is to review the plans for updating and expanding into the unused portions of the club.” Marx stood up and walked ’round the desk to where a group of papers were pinned to a board on the far wall.

  Sawyer and Max got up along with the other two men to follow Marx. The papers ended up being a set of blueprints for the club. He looked over them as Marx explained the different areas marked on the paper. Besides the main open dungeon area, there was an entrance room with two locker rooms off to one side, one for men and one for women. There were exits into the main room from both sets of locker rooms. An alcove that was only separated by lattice board lined part of the back wall. It was designed to meet the needs for aftercare. Another smaller alcove had a three-foot-high wall separating it from the other areas where Marx told them Doms and subs could negotiate scenes.

  “This area here, is the bar and lounge area,” Jackson pointed out. “We only allow one alcoholic drink per member. When you come through the door, you pick up your one token. That one drink and water are free. We sale various other drinks, like sports waters and sodas, as well as snack items. There are chocolate bars as well as a non-chocolate substitute available in the aftercare are
a.”

  “I like the layout. It’s well thought out and allows for some sense of privacy where needed,” Max said with a nod. “What about security? What set up do you have now?”

  “We have two dungeon monitors each night, and more on special occasions. There are security cameras in the main dungeon area with the monitors located in the room behind this office where someone sits and views the feed while the club is open.” Jackson pointed out the locations of the cameras.

  Sawyer could see that more were needed, especially in aftercare area and the negotiation area. He also wanted another one in the entrance room that showed the entrances to the two locker rooms. They wouldn’t put any in them unless something happened to warrant it. He continued to listen as Marx and Jackson went over the entire building.

  “Now upstairs is empty except for the temporary apartments we set up for you. We’d like to eventually make a series of themed rooms up there that can be reserved for two and three hours at a time. All of them would have windows into them, but would contain curtains if they want privacy. Only vetted members would be allowed to reserve these rooms.” Marx turned toward them. Sawyer was sure he was gauging their reactions.

  “That would be a definite crowd pleaser,” Sawyer began. “The only thing is that it will require more security and entail a certain amount of risk.”

  “We realize this, but there are many of our members who have or are about to start planning a family. They aren’t going to be able to maintain home playrooms like they may have now. Sometimes privacy is a much sought after commodity, and we think we need to offer this to our more trusted members.” Marx had a valid argument.
