  Chapter One

  Bang. Caleb dropped the hammer into the tool pouch sitting on the floor next to the kitchen cabinets. They were finished. The house was done. He couldn’t be happier. It had been a long, slow journey to build the house of their dreams.

  “What do you think?” Caleb asked.

  “I think it’s time for a beer or three,” Austin said.

  “We’re just about out of everything. Need to go down the mountain and stock up.”

  “Let’s grab dinner while we’re there. Don’t much feel like cooking today,” Austin told him.

  “Agreed. Need a shower first.”

  “Hell yeah. I smell like three-day-old roadkill.”

  Caleb grinned. He figured he was just as ripe. They’d been working nonstop all day in order to finish everything up. It had been a long six months of hard labor. They’d essentially done everything themselves with the exception of the plumbing and electrical work. It had been worth it though. The place was perfect. Now if they could find a woman to share it with them.

  He huffed out a breath. That wasn’t going to be any easier than building the house had been. What woman in her right mind would take on two mouthy mountain men at one time? Building on the mountain had been their way of isolating themselves from the toxic talk people had a way of spreading around when confronted with something different from what they believed in. A group of guys who thought along the same lines had bought up all the land on the mountain with the intent of creating their own community of ménage families.

  Caleb sighed and jerked his T-shirt over his head with one hand. He quickly shucked his boots and jeans before turning on the shower in the master suite. He couldn’t wait to share the big stall with his future woman and Austin. They would fuck her and bathe her together once they found her.

  Caleb quickly washed and rinsed off, intent on getting to town and getting something to eat. They needed to celebrate the completion of phase two of their plans—finishing their home. Phase one had been buying the land and getting their friends to buy the rest of the mountain so they wouldn’t have to worry about nosey neighbors.

  As soon as he had dressed in clean jeans and a shirt, Caleb joined his best friend in the living room, where the other man was standing in front of the big-screen TV watching a football game.

  “Ready?” he asked.

  Austin nodded and flicked off the TV. “Starved. Called the others to see if they wanted to meet up. Phillip and Jasper are coming, but the others are busy.”

  “Sounds good. Let’s go.”

  The bar was busy despite it being a Thursday night. It had the best greasy burgers and fries in town. Plus, they could get a pitcher of beer to go with the food. Caleb took a long pull on his beer as they waited for their meal and for the other two guys to show up.

  “Can’t believe we finally finished,” Austin said, setting his mug on the table.

  “About fucking time. I was beginning to doubt we’d ever get it done. Now all t
hat’s left is to clean up and finish furnishing the place, and we’re all set,” Caleb said.

  Wish we already had our woman to help decide on how to furnish it. What if she doesn’t like what we’ve done?” Austin asked.

  “I guess we let her redecorate. Whatever makes her happy,” Caleb said.

  “Where are we going to find a woman who will love both of us?” his friend asked.

  “I don’t know, but she’s out there. All we have to do is look. We’re lucky we work for ourselves and can spend the time searching for her,” Caleb told him.

  They were carpenters and tended to stay busy in the spring and summer but not as much in the fall and winter. That was fine with them. They’d amassed a large savings over the years from being in the army. It wasn’t like they’d needed anything while they’d been overseas. They’d invested it wisely. As long as they continued to work when they could, they’d be fine.

  “Glad you could make it,” Austin said as two other men walked over to their table and sat down.

  “You’re fucking late,” Caleb said.

  Phillip and Jasper pulled out chairs, which made grating noises on the concrete floor, and sat down. Phillip’s black hair was pulled back at the base of his head while Jasper’s light-brown hair lay haphazardly on his shoulders. Both men were over six feet with Jasper being slightly taller.

  “Didn’t know this was a date. I’d have dressed up for you if I’d known that,” Jasper snarled back.

  “We finished the house today,” Caleb said instead of hurling another insult.

  “That’s great. You can work on ours now,” Phillip suggested.

  A waitress interrupted them to take Phillip and Jasper’s order. When she’d left after making sure the two new men had seen her tits nearly hanging out of her top, they continued their conversation.

  “Thought your place was pretty much finished,” Austin said, pouring more beer.

  “It is except for the cabinets and shelves. Really want you guys to work on those for us,” Jasper explained.

  “We can do that. Didn’t realize you were holding out for us,” Austin said.

  “Yeah, kind of wanted some custom builds in the house. You guys have the best rep around here,” Phillip pointed out.

  “We’ll stop by tomorrow morning and check out what you’re wanting,” Caleb took a sip of his beer.

  “Sounds good,” Phillip said.

  When their food arrived, talk turned to sports and women in general. None of them had any prospects, and they worried that now that they’d stepped full-booted into their dreams, said dreams might not come true.

  All the men on the mountain had met up in a club in Billings, Montana, and talked about how they wished there was a place where they could live out their fantasies without a lot of nosey neighbors. Over time they’d bonded and made plans to find a place where they could control who lived next to them. That had eventually evolved into their buying the small mountain between Conrad and Shelby, MO.

  Between all of the men who’d joined them, they owned the entire mountain. It was called Big Buck Mountain, but they called it Ménage Mountain among themselves. Everyone who lived on it wanted to share a woman between them.

  They weren’t naïve, they knew the town folks down the mountain would still judge them, but there wouldn’t be anyone breathing down their necks since they owned the entire mountain. Plus, they could order most of their supplies without setting foot in the valley if they wanted to. Sure, they’d have to buy their perishables there, but all in all, their women would be protected from the nasty glares and verbal assaults.

  “Congratulations on finishing your place, guys,” Phillip said, lifting his mug.

  They all bumped glasses, then drank deeply. They were starting their dream.

  “There’s not a lot of places for rent here in Cozy, Montana. Most of the available places are either large family homes or in poor repair. I have a few to show you, but I’m not sure they’re what you’re looking for,” Barb, the realtor, said.

  “I’m not that picky. All I need are two bedrooms, the ability to connect to the Internet, and a working kitchen. I can work on the rest in my spare time,” Selena told the woman.

  “Let’s go look at the Marshall home first. I really think it’s more of what you’re looking for, and they might rent to own or something. Who knows, you might fall in love with it and decide to buy it.”

  Selena really didn’t want to buy anything. She just wanted to rent since she never knew when she’d decide to pick up and leave again. She’d had a restless spirit all her life and hadn’t been able to stay long in any one spot. Selena felt as if she was searching for something and when she finally found it, she’d be ready to put down roots. So far, she hadn’t.

  “Okay. Show me the Marshall place,” she said with a sigh.

  “Perfect. Let’s go.”

  Selena followed the other woman in her SUV and enjoyed the ride outside of town. It was fall and the trees were in full explosion with every color brightly lit in the early morning sunlight. Montana wasn’t somewhere she’d ever lived before, and she was looking forward to it. She knew the winters would be harsh, but Selena felt she would be fine. She had plenty to keep her busy.

  She was a writer. She ghostwrote books for other authors who had too much going on to write their own books. Not having her name on them didn’t really bother her since she also wrote the occasional cozy mystery for herself. Right now, Selena had more than she could do and wasn’t worried about being lonely or feeling cooped up. She much preferred her own company these days. People were so demanding and rude. She couldn’t abide the nosey neighbor who always seemed to be looking out their curtain at you. It was why she normally chose rural places to live instead of big cities.

  So far, this Marshall house fit the bill of being outside the city limits and away from nosey neighbors. Sure enough, a few minutes later they pulled down a long gravel drive and parked in front of a small two-story house that looked in good shape. It had a small front porch with two rocking chairs on it and a railing surrounding it. She climbed out of the SUV and noted that the roof looked nearly new as well as the paint. They’d definitely updated it to make it more appealing to a buyer.

  “So? What do you think so far?” the realtor asked.

  “It’s nice. If I were buying a place, this one would be a good start,” she told her.

  “Let’s go inside. I think you’ll really like it.”

  Selena followed the woman up the steps and across the small porch to wait by the door as she unlocked the house. When she stepped inside, something clicked inside of her. The small entrance hall had a coat closet and enough room to pull off everything before you traipsed through the house.

  The entrance hall split up in two different directions. On the left was a living room large enough for a family of three or four, while the other direction led into a room that would be perfect for an office. It had a wall of shelves on one side and a picture window along the back of the room.

  “This was an office. It would be perfect for you since you said you work from home.” The realtor wasn’t missing any chances to point out the pluses to the house. “It even has a half bath attached to it.”

  Selena looked into the tiny bathroom and admitted it would be nice to have one right next to the office. She followed the woman around into the living room, which also boasted a gas fireplace as well as space for her sectional sofa. The living room opened into the eat-in kitchen. It was separated by a bar/cooking area. It would be perfect for her. She imagined it was a bit small for a family of four or so, but with it just being her, it was large enough by far. She also liked that it had a pantry and a separate laundry area.

  “Let’s go upstairs to see the bedrooms. There are three. A master suite and two others that share a Jack and Jill bathroom.” The realtor led her upstairs.

  By the time they’d finished touring the house, Selena was convinced that it was perfect for her. Still, she d
idn’t want to buy a house. She would see if the seller would consent to leasing it to her. As much as this would be the perfect place for her to settle down, she wasn’t sure she was ready yet.

  “It’s located at the base of Big Buck Mountain and is only fifteen minutes from Cozy and an hour from Conrad if you want a larger town to shop in.” The realtor was pulling out all the stops.

  “I really like the house, but I’m not wanting to buy. Let’s see what else you have that’s for rent first.”

  The woman nodded, and the rest of the day they looked at less-than-stellar rental houses around town. Maybe she should look at a different town. There clearly wasn’t anything worth renting in Cozy.

  “So? What do you think?” the woman asked once they’d returned to her office.

  “Honestly, the only house worth talking about is the Marshall place, and that one isn’t for rent. If they would be willing to rent it for five or six months, I’d consider it,” she said.

  “I’ll talk to them. There haven’t been any buyers looking at it yet, and it’s been on the market for nearly a year now. I think they might agree with the understanding that if a buyer comes along, you’ll vacate.”

  “Sounds good to me. See what you can do and let me know. I’ll be at the motel,” Selena said.

  The little motel in town was cute and rustic and clean. She’d been pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn’t musty or outdated at all. It worked for her since her room had a small desk that allowed her to work while she waited to find out if she could rent the house.

  A chubby tortie jumped up on the desk to strut in front of her as she turned on her laptop. The poor thing had gone three rounds with a rabid raccoon by the looks of its ragged ears and the multitude of marks on its muzzle, but Selena loved the fat cat more than anything. She petted the portly feline until it settled down on one side of the desk and concentrated on cleaning itself before its nap.
