  Chapter One

  Adonna locked the door and looked around her before sloshing through the water standing in the parking lot toward her car. It had been raining nonstop for hours, not only keeping the clientele away, but also overflowing the drains and flooding the parking lot so that she had to wade through ankle deep water. So much for her ankle boots. She’d have to dry them with the hair dryer, or they’d be ruined if they weren’t already.

  Her commute to and from work each day was about thirty minutes. Not long, and usually she enjoyed the time to think about the day ahead or unwind from the day’s activities. Today though, she was wired from the storms and ready to be home with a cup of hot chocolate and a book. With it being early Sunday morning, she didn’t have to work again until she had to go in at six Monday evening.

  Her hours were strange because she ran an adult store on the interstate outside of town. It was open from ten in the morning till two the next morning, six days a week. She normally worked the six p.m. till two a.m. slot so she could do the books, and because all she could get were college students who didn’t want to work such late hours.

  She’d just turned down her street when her car sputtered, then coughed, then choked and died.

  “Well, hell.” It was nearly five in the morning. No one would be open at this hour to help her. She grabbed her phone and bumped her head with it.

  “Siri, what’s the name of the nearest automobile shop?”

  “Evan’s Performance Motors on Castel Street. Would you like me to dial it for you?”

  “Yes, please.”

  She listened as it rang, not believing for a moment that anyone would answer. When they did, she nearly shouted with joy.

  “Evan’s Performance Motors. How can I help you?” The voice was husky sounding, as if he’d been asleep when she’d called.

  “Um, my car just quit on me, and I need it towed. Can you do that, or do you know of a shop who will?” she asked.

  “Um, hold on a second.”

  After a few seconds the voice returned. “Where are you located?”

  She gave her address. “I’m actually only about six blocks from home, but it still needs to be fixed.”

  “I’ll be there in thirty minutes. Are you safe where you are, or do you need me to call someone to come sit with you?” he asked.

  That took her by surprise. They did that sort of thing? “Um, I’m fine until you get here. Uh, thanks though.”

  “No problem. Lock your doors and stay in the car until I get there. I’ll hurry.” The line went dead and Adonna shook her head.

  That was interesting. She’d never had anyone actually worry about her safety before. Really, she owned and operated an adult store, and no one had ever worried that she’d get some freak job in the store who’d go crazy on her ass or something. Then there would have to be someone in her life to worry, and she didn’t have anyone. Her parents had long since disowned her. Her sister had, as well. When she’d refused to toe the Harrington line, they’d locked her out of their life and never looked back. Well, she was doing fine without them.

  Her parents had expected her to marry a man they’d picked out for her and pop out two perfect little angels, one boy and one girl, who they would dote on while she kept a perfect house and did the charity rounds like her mom and sister. Well, that wasn’t the life for her. She want
ed to do something with her life. Maybe she hadn’t envisioned an adult store, but at least it was hers and it was a success.

  She sighed. Another year, if business stayed strong, and she’d have enough capital to open a women’s lingerie store in town, as well. She would sell upscale intimates for the discerning woman. It was one of her dream ventures.

  I can make it work just like I made this work. I’m not a failure like my parents see me.

  She wasn’t. She was successful in her own right. Even if she made millions of dollars, they’d never see her as anything but a disgrace, so why should she even think about them?

  Probably because they were her family, and it was only natural to wish they were around when she was lonely, like now while she sat waiting on a tow truck to pick up her piece of junk car.

  Twenty minutes later, the truck arrived, and a devilishly handsome man with sleep-tussled hair that was just a little shaggy stepped out of the truck as she got out of her car. He had a strong jaw and high cheekbones with vivid green eyes and light brown hair. He stood at a little over six feet tall next to her five foot three inches, and had shoulders wide enough to handle any crises a woman could come up with.

  “Hi, I’m Mitch. Pop the hood and let me take a look first,” he said.

  Adonna nodded and climbed back inside to pull on the latch to release the hood catch. She watched as he fiddled around inside.

  “Try to crank it,” he said.

  She turned the key, but nothing happened. He closed the hood and dusted off his hands.

  “Definitely dead. I’ll tow it to the shop, and we’ll take a look at it. Come on and get into the truck. It’s safer for you in there while I hook up the car,” he said.

  She climbed into the big truck. He handed her a clipboard and asked her to fill it out with her basic information as he drove around her car, then backed in front of it. When he climbed down and proceeded to hook up the car, she noticed that the inside of the cab was clean and smelled decent. Nothing like she would have expected a tow truck to look and smell like. She would have expected trash and the stench of cigarettes and stale food.

  “Gotcha hooked up. Ready?” he asked.

  “Ready,” she said, holding on to her purse.

  “By the way, what’s your name?”

  “Oh, sorry. I’m Adonna Harrington. It’s a pleasure to meet you,” she said.

  “I’d shake your hand, but mine’s dirty. Good to meet you, though not under these circumstances. Don’t worry, we’ll figure out the problem and fix you right up. Now direct me to your house and I’ll drop you off on my way to the shop.”

  Adonna directed him to her house, then waved good-bye as he drove off. She unlocked the door and walked inside, hoping that whatever was wrong wouldn’t cost her a fortune in parts and labor.

  As she showered off, she couldn’t help but think about the handsome man who’d picked up her car. He’d been easy on the eyes and friendly. On top of that, he’d been a perfect gentleman and hadn’t made a pass at her. When had she last been around a man who hadn’t made her feel dirty just by being in the same room with them? Even the few men she’d dated hadn’t treated her as nice as he had, when all he’d done was picked her car up to tow to his garage.

  I wonder what he’d be like out on a date? Would he convert to an obnoxious octopus like all the other men I’ve gone out with, or would he be just as nice as he was this morning?

  Once she’d dried off and donned her favorite sleep shirt, Adonna picked up her e-reader and grabbed a Diet Coke and hopped into bed to read for a while. She loved murder mysteries and Intrigues. She couldn’t get enough of them, but still read the occasional raunchy romance. Today she was reading a Lee Child book though and was in the middle of it. By the time she was too sleepy to keep reading, she had finished her drink and could barely keep her head up. She closed the cover of the reader and snuggled down in the bed and was out in seconds.

  “I’m telling you, she was a dream, man. Rich brown hair with the prettiest hazel eyes I’ve ever seen. One second they were green, and the next they were light brown. And she had a little dimple on the side of her mouth when she smiled. Came up to about here on me. He held up his hand about chest level.”

  “Doesn’t mean she’s perfect for us, Mitch. You fall for every woman you see thinking she’ll be the one. Give it a rest. We’re never going to find a woman who’ll take us both on. I’ve about had it with even looking,” David said.

  Mitch sighed. His friend had been down ever since the last few men had found their women and settled down. They were the last of the group and hadn’t yet found a woman to share. David had been so positive they’d meet her at first, but with each year that had gone by, he’d grown more and more despondent. Mitch stayed positive that their woman was still out there. All they had to do was continue to look.

  “I’m not giving up, David. This may be the one. She’s pretty and was nice. Didn’t treat me like trash because I drove the tow truck like a lot of women do. You know the type, haughty and holy as shit,” he said.

  “Doesn’t mean anything,” David said.

  “Means she’s a nice girl.”

  “Doesn’t mean she’ll go for two men, though.

  “Doesn’t mean she won’t.”

  “Since you’re so hung up on her, you can get to work and figure out what’s wrong with her car. The sooner you do that, the sooner you can see her again, and that’s what you want to do anyway, right?” David asked with a snarl in his voice.

  “Fine.” David hooked the car up to the diagnostics computer and began running tests. It looked like her alternator was shot as well as her battery. Tough luck that both went out at the same time. Weird actually. That didn’t happen as a rule.

  Fate maybe?

  He’d take it any way he could get it.

  With it being Sunday, he’d have to wait until Monday to call the parts house to see if they had the part he needed in stock. He knew they’d have the battery, but the alternator was another matter. In the meantime, he’d give Adonna a call and let her know what was wrong with her car, and what she could expect cost wise and time wise.

  He called the phone number from the paperwork he’d had her fill out earlier that morning, and was surprised when she picked up with a sleepy voice.

  “Hello?”

  “Um, Ms. Harrington?”

  “Yeah?”

  “This is Mitch. I’m calling about your car.”

  “Yes, what’s wrong with it?” she asked.

  “Dead alternator and dead battery. I have to wait until the parts place opens Monday to find out if they have the alternator in stock or not. If they do, I can have your car ready by late Monday afternoon. If they don’t, it will be Wednesday if they overnight the part. I’m sure they will have the battery.

  “I need the car to get to and from work. If they have the part, will it be ready by four on Monday?” she asked.

  “I can make that happen. If they don’t have it, I can give you a lift to work for sure. Depends on the time you get off work as to if I can give you a lift home or not,” he said.

  There was silence on the other end. He wondered if he’d dropped the call. “Hello?”

  “You’ll give me a ride? Isn’t that outside the services your business provides?” she asked.

  “We help any way we can, Ms. Harrington. If we can provide a ride somewhere, we do it,” he said.

  “That’s really unusual. I’ve never had a mechanic offer to help like that before,” she said.

  “It’s just one of the ways we try to make our business unique to the public. What time do you need to be at work?” he asked.

  He hoped he could take her to work so he could spend more time with her. He was tempted to make sure her car wouldn’t be ready just so he could. He should feel guilty thinking that way, but he didn’t.

  “I need to be there before six. It’s just outside of town.”

  “No problem. I can easily take you if your
car isn’t ready. What time do you get off work?” he asked.

  “Usually around three or four in the morning. I wouldn’t expect you to come get me at that hour,” she said.

  “How will you get home if I don’t come get you?” he asked.

  “I don’t know. I’ll have to figure out a way,” she said.

  Mitch sighed. He wouldn’t be holding her car back if the part was in. He couldn’t do that to her when he couldn’t pick her up, as well. He sighed and tried to think of other ways to spend more time with her. Maybe at her job. He’d have to see where she worked. There weren’t many businesses outside of town. There was the truck stop and a trucking company. He wasn’t sure what else there was.

  “I’ll let you know Monday afternoon if the part is in or not,” he said.

  “Thanks. I really appreciate your help,” she said.

  “No problem.” He pressed end and set his phone on the desk before rubbing his hand over his face.

  I like her. She’s pretty and sweet, and something just calls to me about her. I don’t want to lose the opportunity to get to know her better. What am I going to do after her car is fixed? He didn’t know and that was the problem.

  Chapter Two

  The sound of chimes stirred Adonna from sleep. She opened one eye, then the other, as her phone chimed again. Damn. It felt as if she’d just gone to sleep. She grabbed her phone and checked the time. Yep, time to get up. She silenced the alarm and climbed out of bed. She grabbed her e-reader before it fell off the bed and set it on her bedside table. That’s what she got for reading late into the morning.

  Adonna shuffled into the bathroom to get ready for work. She briefly wondered if her car would be ready or not. Well, she couldn’t do anything about it whether it was or wasn’t. After she got dressed, she fixed herself an omelet and a glass of orange juice. She’d just finished when her cell trilled.
