Diana still isn’t sure that their relationship will stand the test of time and holds off committing to them. She’s cautious and even with them telling her about other ménage families they know about she holds back.

  Chapter One

Diana stood, stretching so hard her ears rang with the effort. She’d been sitting in front of the computer for far too long. Her back ached, and her fingers were cramping. That had been one hell of a long marathon writing session.

I did it though. I finished the book in time to edit it and get it off to my editor.

She’d pushed herself to the limit to get the extra book done by the deadline. Normally she wrote six books a year with two novellas and a couple of short stories as Sophia Lawrence, but when an opening had cropped up for an additional book with the stipulation that it had to be ready within the next two months, Diana had eagerly grabbed it, assuring the publisher that she could make the deadline.

Ever since she’d submitted her first book over five years earlier she’d been hooked on writing. She loved creating characters that readers could fall in love with. Often, they were men and women she could identify with, but sometimes they were complete strangers to her until she’d written them on the page. Each one of them came alive for her as she told their story.

She strode out of her office and walked down the hall to the kitchen. Felicity, her Bengal, followed close on her heels. She needed a Diet Coke and something to eat. She suppressed a yawn and amended that thought to include a nap once she’d eaten. The clock on the microwave said it was four in the morning. She’d been at it for more than twelve hours straight with only bathroom breaks. Yep, time for food and her bed. No doubt she’d sleep round the clock after filling her tummy.

She refilled the cat’s bowl after getting the death stare from her and ran a hand down her fur before opening the refrigerator to see what she could fix to eat.

Ten minutes and two grilled cheese sandwiches later, Diana pulled off her clothes and climbed into bed. True to form, Felicity circled twice at the foot of the bed before curling up and settling down, as well. It didn’t take her long at all to fall asleep, but the dreams came again. The ones that mirrored her past. They haunted her nearly every night since she’d survived the attack.

They started out with her finishing a book and wanting to celebrate. It had been her third one in a four-book series. Diana was over the world excited. She’d called up her friends and planned to meet them at the local Mexican restaurant for dinner and margaritas. Haley, June, and Lana were waiting on her when she arrived. They hugged her then they all sat down to order their first drink of the night.

They’d tease her about writing smutty romances as always, but in truth, they were her closest fans who’d encouraged her to submit and keep submitting until she’d finally landed her first contract. Had it only been four years ago? She’d been writing for five, and celebrating her fourth book after only a year had been a miracle. Some authors went years before they got their first contract, but Diana had been lucky.

“To Diana and success,” June had said, issuing the first toast of many that night.

They’d partied until nearly midnight before finally calling it a night. They’d each sobered up enough to drive home. Diana wasn’t worried. She only had a few blocks to where she lived and had never had trouble in the past considering that they usually met once a week for drinks and girl talk.

When she walked through the door of her little house, she didn’t sense anything wrong. Even when she’d flipped the light switch,
and nothing happened, she just figured the breaker had thrown. It had done that several times since she’d lived there. Admittedly it was usually when she used her hair dryer when the washer or dryer was on, but still, she wasn’t the least bit worried.

That came when she shuffled toward the kitchen and the back porch where the breaker box was and ran right into a hard body blocking her way.

“Hello, Sophia. I’ve been waiting on you.”

  * * * *

“Where the fuck are you, Kyle?” Quinn yelled from the back door. “I’m not waiting around all fucking day while you try to pick out something to wear like a damn woman.”

“Fuck you. I was looking for my damn socks. Need to do laundry today. I had to wear the same ones I wore yesterday,” Kyle snarled.

“Don’t pull off your boots around me. I don’t want to smell your nasty foot odor. What is it about you and doing laundry? It’s a hell of a lot easier than cleaning up the damn kitchen, and you do that all the time.”

“Hate doing it. Comes from having to work in laundry when I was in the service before I shipped off to Afghanistan. Kept earning laundry duty for being a total fucktard on base. What’s your excuse?”

Quinn laughed. “I ended up with kitchen duty because I failed inspection more than I passed.”

Kyle chuckled. “At least all that KP duty taught you how to cook. Otherwise, we’d either starve or exist on TV dinners.”

They’d had this same conversation almost every time one of them cursed something they needed to do. Like laundry. Kyle loved giving his friend hell. They’d been together since shipping out all those years ago. When they’d ended up in the same unit, they’d harassed each other until they were best friends.

Kyle followed Quinn outside after pulling on his coat and donning gloves. It was ice cold, and the wind made it feel like shards of ice pierced the skin of his face as he climbed into the cab of the truck. He immediately cranked the truck and switched on the heater, praying it would warm up before they actually made it down the mountain into town. Once Quinn had climbed in and shut his door, Kyle backed around the house then pulled down the drive to make the twenty-minute trip into town. Normally he could do it in fifteen, but with the weather as cold as it was, he’d have to watch for icy patches on the twisting road.

“Think we’ll get as much snow as they’re predicting?” Quinn asked.

“Maybe. I just hope it’s the last big storm of the season. I’m ready for spring so I can get outside to my shop easier,” Kyle said.

While Quinn wrote murder mysteries for a living, Kyle did woodworking and sold a lot of his creations online. Though he often built furniture for people, he much preferred carving intricate statues and making wooden keepsake boxes. The demand for his one-of-a-kind creations was high, and he had a waiting list a mile long.

Kyle’s shop was built on a level spot of ground several hundred yards from the house. When it was icy with snow on the ground it was hard to navigate down the hill to get to it. Quinn could write from the comfort of his desk, but Kyle often ended up doing some of his carvings in the kitchen where it was easier to clean up any mess he made.

“I’ll grab the groceries while you mail out your packages and grab the other things we need. You can pick me up at the grocery store. Should cut our time in town down quite a bit. I don’t like the looks of those clouds,” Quinn said.

“Good idea. Shouldn’t take me more than an hour to get it all done. With the list you made, it will take you that long to grab everything.”

“Don’t know how long we’ll be stuck up on the mountain, so we need to be prepared.”

Kyle pulled up outside the grocery store and waited for Quinn to climb out of the truck. Then he headed to the post office to drop off his packages. They were already metered since he had his own scales and did online postage. All he had to do was get them scanned in and a printed receipt that proved he’d mailed them out.

When he walked into the post office to stand in line he noticed a woman standing one person ahead of him with shoulder-length red hair. It looked thick and soft and was the prettiest color red he’d ever seen. The woman was short, maybe five feet two or three inches tall, and curvy with enough meat on her bones to tempt a saint. And he was no saint. He wished he could see her face. Even without knowing what she looked like from the front, Kyle was already in lust.

When the next window was open, she walked over with her envelopes to hand to the clerk. She turned as if feeling his eyes on her and smiled at him. Fuck him. She had the prettiest bright blue eyes he’d ever seen. They seemed to sparkle as she looked him over. Did she feel the same draw he did?

He loved the little dimple at the corner of her mouth, and the light dusting of freckles across her nose and the tops of her cheeks made him want to trace each precious dot with his tongue. Yeah, she was perfect.

When she was finished at the window, Kyle wanted to follow her and ask her name, but he had to wait his turn. Then as soon as the clerk handed his receipt to him he was out the door looking for her only to be disappointed when she was nowhere to be found.

Well, fuck. Surely as small as this town is, I’ll see her again. Wish Quinn would have been with me. Then one of us would have been able to follow her out.

Kyle picked up the rest of the supplies they needed from the home store then drove over to the grocery store where he found Quinn just coming out of the store with a cart piled high with groceries. They quickly loaded the truck, then when Kyle turned to take the cart back to the store, he saw a swish of red move past him out of the corner of his eye. When he turned to look it was to see the gorgeous woman from the post office walking past with a cart full of bags heading past them.

“Holy fuck,” Quinn said. “Did you see that woman?”

“Come on. I saw her at the post office, but she disappeared before I could talk to her. This is our chance.”

Just as she stopped and opened the back of her SUV, Kyle reached out and touched her shoulder to get her attention. He wasn’t prepared for her startled reaction. She screamed then jumped back with raw fear on her face.

“Hey. Sorry. Didn’t mean to scare you. Why don’t you get in and warm up your car while we load up these groceries for you?” he said.

“Oh, thanks, but you don’t have to do that. I can do it,” she said.

“Why should you when we can do it for you? Go on. Crank up the car and let it warm up,” Kyle said.

She looked from him to Quinn then back again. Shrugging, she walked around them to unlock her door and climbed behind the wheel. When she’d cranked the car, he and Quinn made short work of loading her groceries. Once finished, they closed the back then walked around to the driver’s side and tapped on the window.

The woman lowered her window with a broad smile. “Thanks. I really do appreciate it.”

“No problem. I’m Kyle, and this is Quinn,” he said.

“I’m Diana. It’s nice to meet you.”

“I saw you at the post office earlier but missed out on introducing myself then,” he said.

“I remember. I was in a hurry to get my groceries and get back home before it started snowing,” she said.

“We’d like to ask you out sometime. Could we have your phone number?” Kyle asked.

“Um, yeah. I guess so.” She rattled off her number while Kyle plugged it into his phone. Then he sent her a text, so she’d have his, as well.

She looked over at her purse when she heard the series of chirps. With a smile she patted the purse.

“Got yours now, too. Thanks again. I better get going,” she said.

“We’ll text you later, Diana,” Quinn said.

They stepped back as she backed out of the parking spot and drove away. Kyle looked at Quinn, and the two of them bumped fists. Life was good.

  Chapter Two

Diana quickly unloaded her groceries then put them away as she hummed to herself. She couldn’t stop thinking about the two men who’d helped her with them at the store.
They were both very good-looking men in different ways. She couldn’t help but be attracted to them. The fact that there were two of them was weird. She’d never been asked out by two men at one time. What would they do, flip a coin to see who asked her out first?

She chuckled then yelped when Felicity streaked past between her legs and slid into the food bowl. The empty food bowl.

“Really? Where do you put all that food you eat?” Diana asked, shaking her head.

She put a scoop of food into the bowl then watched as the frisky feline ate a single mouthful before running off in the direction of Diana’s office. Crazy cat.

As soon she finished in the kitchen, she poured herself a Diet Coke and strode into the office to find Felicity curled up on the cat bed on the desk next to her computer. Diana smiled. The cat was good company most of the time. Her crazy personality really came out when she stalked one of her extra-large rat toys and killed it. Then she’d scream as she carried it around the house as if to show off her prowess.

Diana settled in her chair and sipped her drink as she stared at the empty screen of her computer monitor. She couldn’t stop thinking about the two men. Kyle had short dark hair with a strong chin and high cheekbones. He had a narrow nose that seemed to accent the twinkle in his dark eyes. The man looked to be a few inches over six feet, with broad shoulders and a narrow waist with muscular arms. In comparison, he had long fingers that would have been perfect if he played the piano.

Quinn had shaggy blond hair with blue eyes the color of robins’ eggs. He had a square jaw and a high forehead. Though he was slightly shorter than Kyle, he had a little more meat on his bones than the other man. Both men looked to be in their early thirties.

She sighed and set her drink down to open her computer to work on editing the book, so she could send it to her publisher. Already she had another story line circling in her head for yet another book. She couldn’t wait to start on it, but knew she needed to finish editing first. It proved to be difficult to get started because she kept thinking about the two men. Would they really call her for a date?
