Chapter One
Joe closed the hood and slid the latches into place that held it down. He wiped his hands on the shop towel and tossed it across the room to land half in, half out of the plastic bin to be washed later.
“Andy? You about finished over there?” he called out.
“In a few,” a raspy voice called out from below a Peterbilt on the other side of the shop.
Joe had just finished working on a Kenworth himself. They could handle anything from a Volvo to a Mack. If it ran diesel, they could work on it. He and Andy had opened the shop three years earlier when they’d gotten out of the army and moved to Cozy at the urging of their friends, who’d moved there before them. They’d bought some land on Ménage Mountain and built a house up there. It wasn’t fancy like some of the others, but it was big and open like they liked. They didn’t like to feel closed in.
“Feel like a beer tonight, man. I’ll wait for you in the office. Going to hit the paperwork while you finish up,” Joe yelled as he strode across the room toward the door leading to the office.
“Yeah, sure.”
Joe used the Gojo to try to get even more of the grease off his hands then settled down to work on some of the paperwork that plagued him. He hated it with every fiber of his being. He’d argued constantly with Andy about needing someone to handle the paperwork and dealing with the bills and ordering parts for them. Andy didn’t want anyone in their business. He was as antisocial as they came. Had been like that since they’d returned from overseas. Joe wasn’t sure how he thought they’d ever find a woman to make their own when he wasn’t able to stand being in the same room with anyone but him.
Joe shook his head at the dilemma and concentrated on the invoices in front of him. They weren’t going to file themselves. Fuck he hated filing. Half the time he couldn’t find anything he filed later when he looked for it. He knew his alphabet and how to count, but he’d be damned if it ever ended up in the right place.
Twenty minutes later Andy walked through the office straight to the bathroom, where he made use of the Gojo himself then peed without even bothering to close the door. Joe chuckled. They were quite a pair. No decent woman would ever take them on. Why was he even thinking about it anymore? Neither one of them were house trained in the least.
“Said you wanted a beer?” Andy asked.
“Yeah. Want to go to the bar?” Joe asked.
“Yeah. Need a shower first. Feel too gritty to go now.” Andy wiped a hand across his face.
That was unusual for Andy. Normally he’d just as soon go right after work as go by the house and shower first. Joe wasn’t going to say a word though. He’d much rather shower before going, too.
“Let’s go then. I’m ready.” Joe grabbed his jacket and the keys.
The trip to their house didn’t take long. They were lower on the mountain than most of the other families that lived there. The shop was on the edge of town, which meant that they were only a fifteen-minute drive from home. He’d barely parked the truck before Andy was out and striding for the door. What was up with him that he was in such a hurry to get a shower? That wasn’t like him.
Joe followed him inside and stripped in his room before walking down the hall to the other bathroom, where he turned on the shower and waited for the water to get to the right temperature before stepp
ing under the spray. Once the hot water poured over his head and back, he sighed with relief. It felt so fucking good.
He made short work of cleaning up and quickly dried off to dress in jeans and a fresh T-shirt. He pulled on his boots and ran a comb through his damp hair. It was shaggy and needed a trim, but he never got around to getting it done. Instead, he tied it back out of his face and headed for the stairs to wait for Andy in the kitchen.
Andy surprised him by already being ready and waiting for him with a beer in his hand leaning against the bar.
“What’s up with you, man?” Joe asked.
“What do you mean?” Andy asked.
“First you want to shower before we head to the bar, and second, you’re ready before me. That never happens,” Joe said.
“Don’t know what you’re talking about. Just ready for a night out. Been a long fucking week, man.”
“I’m with you on that.”
“Let’s go.” Andy downed the rest of the beer then tossed the can into the recycle bin before pushing off from the bar and heading for the front of the house.
Joe just shook his head. Something was up with the other man. He’d figure it out soon enough. He followed Andy through the house to the front door and out to the truck. Since Andy had already been drinking, he took the wheel and headed toward the bar. He hoped Andy wasn’t in a fighting mood. He really didn’t want to end up on the wrong end of a fist tonight.

Cindy Collins looked around the bar for the third time. So far there was no sign of her ex. Maybe he hadn’t followed her after all and she was going to be able to relax and just enjoy herself for once. Ever since she’d broken up with him, he’d been dogging her every step, making her life miserable. Why wouldn’t he just go away and leave her alone? He was the one who’d cheated and screwed everything up. Not her.
“Who are you looking for?” Beverly asked. “Surely you aren’t expecting Mark to show up.”
“I hope not. I wouldn’t put it past him though. He keeps showing up wherever I go. I just want him to leave me alone,” Cindy said.
“I don’t get it. He had everything with you. You worshiped the ground he walked on. Why would he throw it all away and cheat? Are you sure?” Beverly asked.
“Bev, I walked in on them going at it. Yes. I’m sure.”
“Right. Sorry.”
“I should have realized before that though. The signs were all there, but I was too in love with him to see them. He was working late more and more. He didn’t want to go out as much. He said he’d rather stay home where it was more intimate. He just didn’t want to be seen with me in case someone said something about the other woman he was boffing.”
“Boffing? Are you kidding me? Who says that? He was fucking her, Cindy,” Beverly said with a chuckle.
“You know what I meant.”
“You are so sweet it’s crazy. Anyone would be a fool not to do everything they could to keep you. Mark was a fool and an idiot. He deserves to lose you,” Beverly said.
“The only reason he wants me back is my money. That’s the only reason he was dating me in the first place. I see it all now. He was never really all that interested in me. I was blind to it before because I thought I was in love with him. Why didn’t you tell me how naïve I was, Bev?” Cindy asked.
“Oh, honey. You were head over heels in love, and I was hoping Mark was the one for you. He had me fooled, as well. He seemed to dote on you. I didn’t see this coming either. I never saw him with anyone else from the time he started taking you out.” Beverly squeezed Cindy’s hand.
“Anyway. That’s all behind me. I want to drink, dance, and have a good time. I just hope he doesn’t show up here tonight. I don’t want anything to screw up my night,” Cindy said.
“Agreed.” Beverly held up her beer. “To a good time.”
Cindy grinned and held up hers, as well. “A good time.”
They clinked mugs and drank amid laughter and giggles. She already felt better. She refused to allow the hurt and betrayal she felt over Mark to ruin her night. He was in the past. It was all in the past. She was starting a new page in her life, and she wasn’t going to let him ruin it for her.
She’d just put her beer down when the door to the bar opened and two of the most handsome men she’d ever seen strode in. Well, handsome in a rugged sort of way. They had chiseled features that were almost too sharp to be handsome, but they were striking in their own way. She couldn’t take her eyes off them as they headed straight for the bar.
“Wow. Get a load of those two,” Beverly said.
“Now those are men,” Cindy said, admiring their back sides as much as she’d admired their fronts.
Their backs were just as broad as their chests had been, and they had nicely rounded asses that her hands aching to squeeze. What she wouldn’t give to have a chance with someone like them, but men like that weren’t attracted to women like her. She was mousey and didn’t attract hot men like that. Which was why she’d been so head over heels in love with Mark. She couldn’t believe someone like him had been interested in her.
And he hadn’t been.
He’d been interested in her money.
Cindy had inherited several million from her grandmother, and ever since then she’d had men chasing her for her money. She’d finally moved away to start over in hopes of finding someone who didn’t know her monetary worth but was attracted to her as a woman. So far, she’d struck out.
Cozy was a nice, laid-back community she found herself falling in love with almost from the beginning. The people were kind, and there was so much available in the small town as far as shopping was concerned.
Cindy had bought a small house on the edge of town and had remodeled it to suit her needs. It wasn’t anything fancy, but it had a great master bath, a state-of-the-art kitchen, and an amazing back deck where she loved to sit and watch the sunset each evening with a cup of hot chocolate.
Beverly nudged her. “They’re coming this way. Smile.”
“I doubt they’ll give us the time of day whether we smile or not, Bev,” Cindy said, but she smiled anyway.
The two men nodded at them and continued on their way to a table near the back of the bar. She followed them with her gaze as they sat down and leaned back in the chairs, sipping their beers.
“Did you see that? They nodded at us,” Beverly said.
“They probably nod at everyone they see. Don’t get your hopes up. Besides, there are lots of men here for you to dance with. You’ll get to dance,” Cindy said.
“I want you to dance, too,” Beverly said.
“Just remember. We have to dance separately because one of us has to watch our drinks,” Cindy said.
“I know. Sucks though.”
A tall blond-haired man walked up and tapped Beverly on the shoulder. “Hi, gorgeous. How about dancing with me?”
Beverly looked across the table at Cindy. She nodded, encouraging her friend to take the man up on his offer. Beverly stood and gave the man her hand, and the two slipped into the crowd surrounding the dance floor. She was happy for her friend. Beverly loved to dance and only went out when she had someone to go out with her. It was much too dangerous for a woman to go out alone these days.
Guess it’s dangerous regardless. I thought I knew Mark, but he surprised the hell out of me. How will I ever be able to trust a man again?
She didn’t know. She hadn’t known that Mark had known about her money before she’d started dating him. When she’d finally told him that she’d inherited some money from her grandmother, he’d acted as if that was no big deal to him. All along he’d already known about it. She sighed. Obviously someone had filled him in. Probably one of her jealous cousins.
Maybe one day she’d find someone worth taking a chance on once more. Right now she wanted to just enjoy herself for a change and not feel as if she had to act a part. The bar seemed the perfect place to just be herself.
“May I have this dance?”

; Chapter Two
Andy watched the two women as they talked at the table on the edge of the dance floor. More specifically, he watched the strawberry blonde one. Her blue eyes and rounded figure called to him. He felt his dick stir when it hadn’t reacted to a woman in ages. Other than his hand, not one woman had aroused his cock in so long he’d begun to think he was turning into a monk.
“Which one are you staring at so hard?” Joe asked.
“The strawberry blonde. Why?” he asked, shooting his friend a quick look.
“Good. That’s the one I’m interested in, as well.”
“She’s hot as hell with all those curves. The other one is too thin for my taste,” Andy said.
“There’s our chance. Her friend is going to dance with someone,” Joe said. “Go ask her to dance.”
“Why me?” Andy scowled.
“You’re better at dancing than I am.”
“Bullshit.”
“Don’t waste this opportunity, man. Someone else is going to ask her if you don’t.”
“Fuck.” Andy stood and stomped toward the woman while trying to stamp down the army of ants marching along his spine.
“May I have this dance?” he asked.
Her startled eyes met his, and a slow pale blush colored her cheeks. She was even more beautiful up close than he’d first believed. He loved how her dark lashes accented the blue of her eyes and drew attention to the sprinkling of freckles across her nose and the upper parts of her cheeks.
“I—I can’t. I’m watching our drinks,” she said.
“Mind if I join you? Then we can dance when your friend returns?” he asked.
“Sure. That will be fine.”
“I’m Andy. What’s your name?” he asked.
“I’m Cindy. It’s great to meet you.”
