  Chapter Nine

  “Caro, are you okay?” Jill asked. “That’s the second time I’ve had to repeat my order to you tonight.”

  “Sorry. I guess I’m a little preoccupied. I’ll do better.”

  “Here you go,” Curly said, holding out a glass of what appeared to be a soda.

  “Guy bought you a Diet Coke.”

  “No. Someone else. He said to give you a drink that you looked like you were thirsty.”

  “Did he specifically say Diet Coke or just a soda?” she asked.

  “Huh, he said Diet Coke. He must know what you like.” Curly’s brows narrowed. “Didn’t even think about it. Sorry I didn’t get his name for you.”

  “No, that’s okay. Thanks, Curly.”

  A cold chill raced down her spine even as her lips began to tremble. No one around here other than Phillip and Jasper knew that she liked Diet Cokes unless they’d been stalking her at the grocery store. While that was possible, it still unnerved her. She debated about telling the guys about it but decided not to. It was probably a one-off thing.

  She hoped.

  By the time the night was done, Caro was exhausted and a little spooked. She needed to get it together, or the men were going to notice that she was edgy.   “Waiting on Curly,” one of the other waitresses said.

  “Will this work?” he asked.

  “We won’t let you.” He poured half a glass and recorked the bottle before putting it away.

  She preceded him up the stairs with her wine and then hesitated, unsure where they were going.

  “Same room, sweets,” he said with a hand to her back.

  Caro walked all the way down the hall to the last door. It was open, and she could hear the water in the bathroom. Jasper followed her inside, then took her wineglass from her hand, and set it on the dresser.
