  “You needed your rest. No reason for you to get up early when you don’t have anything to do,” Maverick said.

  “You can always sit out in the shop and read out there,” Maverick said.

  “There’s a chair in the office with me you can read in, too,” Gage said.

  Shay smiled. “Maybe I’ll divide up my time and read in the morning with you, Maverick, and in the afternoon with you, Gage. How’s that? If you’re too noisy I’ll read in the living room though. Just putting that out there for you.”

  Maverick chuckled. “Gage, you may have a problem with that part.”

  Gage frowned. “How about if I give you some noise-canceling earphones? Will that work?”

  “Maybe,” she laughed.

  “Come on, babe. I’ll set you up out in the shop,” Maverick said.

  “Go on ahead. I’ve got to get my e-reader. I’ll be right there,” she said.

  She waited until he was gone then gave Gage a hug and a kiss. “I’ll see you this afternoon. We’ll work something out.”

  “Have fun reading, sweetheart.” He kissed her back before she ran for the living room to get her e-reader.

  When she walked into the shop, it was to find Maverick positioning a chair to one side of the sculpture he was working on. He had a blanket covering the chair and a pillow on it.

  “What are you doing?” she asked.

  “I didn’t want you to sit where the wood would hit you when I’m cutting, and I didn’t know if you might need a pillow or not,” he said.

  “Thanks. I’ll be fine.”

  “Just let me know if you need anything. There’s water and beer in the fridge.” He snapped his fingers. “I’ll go get some Diet Cokes and put in there for you. I didn’t think about that.”

  “You can do that another time. I’m fine for now, Maverick. Really.”

  “You sure?”

  “I’m sure.”

  “Okay. I get kind of into it when I’m working, so you may need to yell at me if you need me,” he said.

  “Okay, but I won’t need you. I can take care of myself.”

  “I know.”

  He smiled at her then bent over and kissed her sweetly on the lips. Her heart fluttered like a moth at a light bulb before he pulled back and smiled. Then he returned to his sculpture and got to work.

  He was right. Once he was working he was centered and focused on what he was working on. Shay watched him for a few minutes then opened her e-reader and lost herself in her book. Oddly enough it was him who had to snap his fingers between her face and her e-reader to get her attention later.

  “It’s lunch time. Ready to eat?” Maverick asked.

  “Nearly one. Lost track of time, did you?” He laughed.

  “How about grilled cheese instead of cold sandwiches?” she asked.

  “I’m in. I’m sure Gage will be happy with that, as well. I’ll get him when they’re about ready. No need to bother him until it’s about ready,” Maverick said.

  Shay made quick work of cooking up a batch of grilled cheese sandwiches to go with tomato soup. While Maverick went to get Gage, she poured ice tea for them and waited on them to return. Gage looked just as glassy-eyed as she was sure she’d looked when Maverick had pulled her out of her book earlier.

  “Wow, grilled cheese. Can’t wait. I was dreading ham sandwiches again,” Gage said.

  “Real cheese and not that processed stuff, too,” Maverick told him.

  “Hot damn. I knew there was a reason we wanted you to move in with us,” Gage said.

  “See, I knew it was for my cooking and not my body. You guys lied to me,” she said, shaking her finger at them.

  “No problem. I figured you were. I’m thinking tomorrow I’ll cook some individual potpies for lunch. I haven’t made them in years.” Shay nearly burst out laughing at Gage’s face. He looked like he was going to pass out.

  “Really? Something like a real meal at lunch? What can I get for you? Do you want a new dress? Some perfume? Anything?” he asked.

  “Silly.”

  “I’m serious. I’ll give you anything you want if you’ll cook for us like that,” he said.

  “How about you just keep being you,” Shay said, kissing him lightly on the lips. “That’s all I want.”

  He smiled and pulled her into his arms. “I can do that. No problem at all.”

  Shay relaxed against the couch as the guys watched some game on TV. They were sitting on either side of her while she read. The game wasn’t bothering her, but she couldn’t get into the book.   Shay leaned over and kissed Gage on the cheek then Maverick before standing and setting her e-reader on the coffee table and walking toward the stairs. She walked into the bedroom and just stood there for a moment, amazed at how at home she felt in it already. She felt like it was as much hers as theirs now, and she’d only been there a few weeks.

  She strolled across the room to the bathroom and turned on the water in the tub, adjusting it to the right temperature. She added some of her favorite vanilla and lavender bath salts. A nice hot bath would help her relax. She’d had trouble sleeping the last few nights and wasn’t sure why. It was like she was waiting for the other shoe to drop or something.
